BirdShades

invisible bird protection window film

BirdShades invisible bird protection window film empowers you to keep the aesthetic value of the glass surfaces of your building without having a detrimental impact on biodiversity. Our technology is based on a bird-specific ability: most birds see UV light. For humans this part of the light spectra is not visible.

Glass gives modern architecture elegance and enables interior spaces to connect with the surrounding nature without sacrificing comfort. All the benefits that glass brings should not hinder the protection of biodiversity. For this reason, BirdShades addresses not only the needs of birds but also those of humans.

BirdShades has been proven to be a suitable measure to prevent bird-window collisions. International studies by various leading experts have evaluated our invisible bird protection window film under real-world conditions. Their results have shown: BirdShades is as effective as visible alternatives.

We generally have a lot of birds around and sadly many collided with our windows. Since BirdShades is isntalled, this has changed and we fortunately no longer find any collision victims.

FAQ

Blindtext

The retrofitting is done by a professional window-film installer (e.g. who also offers the installation of sun protection films). Since buildings have varying requirements, we are happy to arrange contact between our team and your installer before the installation.

BirdShades guarantees a durability of 5 years. The actual life span can be much longer, depending on location and maintenance it can range up to 10-12 years.

Most songbirds and several other taxa of birds can see short wavelengths. Especially songbirds are affected by window collisions and termed in some scientific studies as ‘super-colliders’. The technology in our BirdShades bird protection window film is based on the scientific understanding that these ‘super-colliders’ perceive a broader spectrum of colors than humans. The effectiveness of our film has been verified and confirmed in several studies under real-world conditions. We recommend to have a look out our Science section which showcases the various scientific test setups. However, although we are confident that our bird protection window film is highly effective, we know it will not be a 100% effective. Bird species can differ and sometimes situations are very unique.

Visible products such as the black hawk silhouettes are not appropriate for bird-window collision mitigation, unless the spacing between the stickers is no further apart than 10cm vertically and 5cm horizontally. However, visible bird protection films can be highly effective with the correct spacing. With BirdShades we want to offer an alternative where visible products are not feasible.

No, due to the retrofit technology, neither the building structure nor the window will be changed or damaged, which makes the BirdShades invisible bird protection window film a suitable solution for example for listed buildings in heritage protection.

There are no special requirements. We recommend not using sharp objects or a high-pressure cleaner to clean the window film to ensure integrity. A part from this cleaning your glass surfaces depending on location is sufficient 1-2 times per year.

Species extinction is not only a significant threat to biodiversity; it also endangers our well-being. We are at the beginning of the sixth mass extinction, and many are unaware of the dreadful consequences that the loss of biodiversity entails. Therefore, the UN has made the preservation of biodiversity one of the focal points of SDG 15.

Birds are also at risk. We often fail to notice this because the cadaver after a window collision is frequently removed by other animals such as cats, martens, rats, etc. It is also possible that birds do not die immediately after the impact, and therefore, they may not be found. We can usually only identify the accident site through vague imprints on the window.

BirdShades can be used for all kinds of float glass. If you have laminated glass or glass with a special coating it is better to check with us beforehand, so we can check the compatibility in our lab.

BirdShades is invisible, but depending on the viewing angle at certain circumstances and depending on the background a transparent pattern can be seen and lead to optical distortions. It’s best if you check beforehand via a sample at your local window film installation company if BirdShades meets your expectations.

BirdShades has been proven effective in scientific studies, demonstrating substantial reductions in bird-window collisions and serving as a viable measure for mitigation of collisions. Feedback from our customers has been overwhelmingly positive. While no product can guarantee a 100% effectiveness, BirdShades consistently leads to significant reductions in collisions.

BirdShades must be installed on the exterior side of the window. In one of our scientific studies, we found that markings to prevent birds from colliding with glass generally lose a lot of their effectiveness when installed on the inside.
